A ten-day loop through the best of Peninsular Malaysia — from the street-food energy of Kuala Lumpur to the UNESCO heritage lanes of George Town, a coastal village homestay, two nights deep in the Ulu Muda rainforest in search of wild elephants, and the cool tea country of the Cameron Highlands before we return to KL.
Selamat datang! Arrive in Malaysia's fast, multicultural capital. We meet as a group this evening for a welcome briefing, then head out for our first taste of the city's legendary street food. Arrive early and you can wander Chinatown's Petaling Street market or the Jalan Alor food stalls before we meet.
Travel north by train up the peninsula to Butterworth, then cross to the island of Penang and its UNESCO-listed capital, George Town. On arrival we take an orientation stroll to get our bearings, then the evening is yours to dive into what may be the best hawker food in Asia.
A guided heritage walk through the old town — the Chinese clan jetties built out over the water, the ornate Khoo Kongsi clan house, the colonial Esplanade and the celebrated street-art murals around every corner. We visit the Pinang Peranakan Mansion, then the afternoon is free for temples, Little India or simply more food.
Transfer to Teluk Bahang, a small fishing village on Penang's north coast, where a local family welcomes us into their home for the night. We try our hand at batik painting, play traditional Malay games, walk the village to see how the fishermen make and mend their nets, and share a home-cooked dinner followed by a Silat martial-arts performance.
We leave the coast and head inland to the Lake Muda jetty, then board a boat to a socially conscious eco-lodge tucked deep in the Ulu Muda rainforest — our home for two nights, surrounded by jungle trails and winding rivers. In the evening we set out on our first river cruise, watching the banks for wildlife, and with luck, wild elephants coming down to drink.
A full day in the forest. We trek into the jungle with an expert naturalist who reads the rainforest for us — the plants, the birdsong, the animal signs — before a riverside picnic and a visit to the natural salt-lick springs where elephants and other wildlife come for their minerals. Late afternoon, a second river cruise to maximise our chances of a sighting.
Say goodbye to the forest and drive south and up into the Cameron Highlands, a cool, green world of rolling tea plantations and a refreshing change of climate. We arrive in the afternoon with time to explore the market stalls and settle into some hearty highland Malay cooking.
Breakfast the local way from a street stall, then a guided trek through the mist-shrouded mossy forest — a strange, dripping world of moss-blanketed trees and pitcher plants that our guide brings to life. Afterwards we tour a working tea estate to see leaf turned into tea, then the afternoon is free for the floral park or a pot of high tea overlooking the valley.
We return to Kuala Lumpur by express coach, arriving mid-afternoon with the rest of the day free. Head up the Petronas Twin Towers, see Merdeka Square and the old colonial quarter, or simply hunt down one last plate of your favourite Malaysian dish. Tonight we gather for an optional farewell dinner.
