Beyond the cities — nights in the central desert at the Garmeh oasis, two days living with Qashqai nomads in the Zagros mountains, and the ancient oasis towns of the Iranian plateau. A day in the capital — the National Museum of Iran, the Golestan Palace (UNESCO) and the Grand Bazaar, with the Alborz mountains behind the city. Overnight in Tehran.

Day 3
Kashan

Drive south to Kashan on the edge of the central desert. The UNESCO-listed Fin Garden and the great 19th-century merchant houses with their windcatchers and painted halls. Overnight in Kashan.

Garmeh

Head out into the Dasht-e Kavir — Iran's great salt desert — to the palm-fringed oasis village of Garmeh. Settle into a traditional mudbrick guesthouse and watch the sun set over the dunes. Overnight in Garmeh.

Garmeh

A full day in the desert — walk to the spring, explore the neighbouring oasis villages of Mesr and Khur, and end with stargazing under some of the clearest night skies anywhere. Overnight in Garmeh.

Yazd

Yazd

Zagros

Drive west into the Zagros mountains to meet a Qashqai nomad family on their seasonal pastures. Tea, an introduction to nomadic life and a night under canvas at the camp. Overnight with the nomads.

Zagros

Before you book — good to know

  1. Most visitors need a visa for Iran. UK, US and Canadian passport holders are required to travel on a guided tour — which is exactly what this is — and we arrange your visa authorisation code and send full guidance when you book.
  2. Iran has a modest dress code. Women are required to cover their hair with a headscarf in public and everyone should keep shoulders and knees covered; we send detailed, practical advice before you travel.
  3. Best time to travel: spring (April–May) and autumn (late September–October) are ideal. High summer is very hot, especially in Yazd and the central desert (35–40°C).
  4. Western bank and credit cards do not work in Iran because of sanctions, so there are no ATMs you can use. Bring enough cash (euros, pounds or US dollars) for personal spending — we'll advise on how much.
